Public Holidays in Zurich
There are 12 public holidays in Zurich, during which shops are closed, children don't go to school and the majority of people are not at work.
Ten of these public holidays are recognized throughout Switzerland as public holidays – Good Friday, Easter Monday and Christmas for example.
Two public holidays celebrated solely in Zurich are the Knabenschiessen (youth's shooting competition in autumn) and Sechseläuten (spring festival) events. During the Sechseläuten spring festival Zurich's city guilds celebrate the end of winter by burning a symbolic snowman, known as Böögg. And in the case of the Knabenschiessen event, Zurich's shooting association organizes a shooting competition accompanied by a popular folk's festival. During both these events people generally work solely in the morning with the afternoon reserved for festivities.
