Cleantech in Zurich

Zurich’s universities are accelerating their research in light of climate change. Funding initiatives facilitate advances in innovation.

The glaciers in the backyard are an enormous climate archive. The University of Zurich (UZH) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) are pioneers in the investigation of eternal ice and modern climate research – from the Alps to the Earth’s poles.

At the same time, Zurich’s top two universities and its technical colleges are engaged in intensive research into technological breakthroughs aimed at halting climate change and protecting natural resources. Their efforts extend from energy production and efficiency to building technology, transit and water conservation. Empa and Eawag in Dübendorf near Zurich represent two important Swiss institutions with international standing, that form a bridge between science and business in the cleantech sector.

The canton of Zurich saw the signs of the times early on. In the field of higher education, an extensive network of public and private funding initiatives has emerged. As a result, today more Zurich cleantech start-ups than ever are successfully transforming research breakthroughs into practical solutions.
