Events During the Advent Season in Zurich
Advent begins in Zurich when the “Lucy” Christmas illuminations along the Bahnhofstrasse are switched on. Then all of Zurich converges on the famous shopping street to marvel at the sparkling lights when they spring to life at 6pm precisely. On the same evening, all the Christmas lights are lit and the city’s numerous Christmas markets open their doors.
This marks the beginning of the contemplative period leading up to Christmas, when the “Märlitram” fairy tale tram trundles through the streets, Circus Conelli enchants with acrobatics and music on the Bauschänzli, children make candles by carefully dipping them in hot beeswax, intrepid adults swim across the icy-cold River Limmat, Santa Claus leads a parade along the Bahnhofstrasse, and much more besides.
