The perfect place to cool down on a warm summer day: the Limmat river. In Zurich, taking a swim in the Limmat river is an integral part of summer – many Zurich residents even use the current to commute to and from work. But where is a dip in the river permitted and which “Badis” (lidos) offer the best Limmat moments? Here are the most important tips for the perfect summer experience in Zurich.

Dos & Don’ts – Safe Swimming in the Limmat river

There are a few rules to follow to ensure that river swimming remains enjoyable:

Dos: Be mindful of the current, use the designated river access points, be considerate and use sun protection.

Don’ts: No risky exercises such as dives in unknown depths or climbing on bridges, no glass bottles – they could break, and the shards could hurt someone. Do not swim in your clothes or if under the influence of alcohol and only go into the river if you are a good swimmer. Do not swim against the current – the power of the river is often underestimated.

The Most Beautiful Limmat Lidos

You can swim in the open but also enjoy the beautiful lidos right on the river.

Don’t Swim in These Places

Even if the Limmat river is a paradise for swimmers, there are some zones where it’s strictly prohibited to swim:

  • Between Quaibrücke near Lake Zurich and the Arts and Leisure Center Dynamo, due to ship traffic. Once a year, the official “Limmatschwimmen” takes place – on this day, people can swim in this area. Get tickets here
  • In the area near Hauptbahnhof
  • Near boat docks
  • Underneath bridges

These areas are dangerous due to currents, ship traffic and boat locks.
