National Museum Zurich
The National Museum, which stands next to Zurich Main Station, is reminiscent of a fairytale castle. However, anyone passing through the arches into the inner courtyard will also find a modern new building, which counterbalances the original one designed by architect Gustav Gull in the historicism style.
The exhibits in the rooms and halls of the National Museum tell much about the history of Switzerland – from its very beginnings to the present day, from warring Confederates to voting women. In addition, socially relevant topics are examined in various special exhibitions. Audio guides are available in various languages, either on a rental device or via the “National Museum” smartphone app.
The permanent exhibition, “Simply Zurich”, on the upper floor of the historical part of the museum is free of charge. It shows the diversity of the City and Canton of Zurich in a playful and subjective way. At the heart of the exhibition is a display case containing 60 objects, all of which tell a story about Zurich’s rich past. The exhibition is suitable for international guests and locals alike.
The picturesque inner courtyard of the National Museum is often also used concerts and other events. This gives rise to a particularly interesting contrast between history, current times, old, and young.
The excellent museum store sells high-quality souvenirs and products made and designed by Swiss artisans.
