Rindermarkt (Cattle Market) – Where Gottfried Keller Grew Up
The house where Gottfried Keller lived as a boy, the "Öpfelchammer" and a very picturesque Zurich are located at Rindermarkt (Cattle Market).
There is an especially picturesque Medieval alleyway in Niederdorf. Not only the name Rindermarkt is somewhat usual, but also the kind of street lighting. The last street lamps lit by gas in Zurich are seen here.
At Rindermarkt, you can find the house where the well-known writer Gottfried Keller lived as a boy and the legendary wine bar Öpfelchammer (Apple Chamber) slightly offset across the street, which the Swiss author liked to frequent. The "Balkenprobe" (beam challenge), a drinking game, in which a candidate has to climb over a ceiling beam and then drink a glass of wine headfirst, has become legendary in the meantime in "Oeli", which is how the bar is called among those in the know.
